Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

I used to have central air in every single apartment I had... but this new one doesn't have it. So I had to buy a window unit, even though I secretly always turned my nose up at them.

OMG they are so much better than I thought!

7k for an AC compressor? Unless your house is like 10,000 square feet or you live in hell, that seems really really high.

Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

I once lived in a horrible unclean nerd apartment. We were retarded and decided that to save money we wouldn't run the AC. We all played WoW all day long and had over 7 computers in the living room, in the summer I used to have to take a break from WoW to go outside and cool off. Needless to say, I am never doing that again. I think if I didn't have AC I would just sprawl out on the floor and lie there all day long.

I hate summer :( My almost-20 year old car's AC doesn't kick in until at least 20 minutes of driving.

Window ACs aren't bad. They get the job done.

Central Air, though I'd rather just open a window and stick a fan on.

In my old house (which was admittedly not designed for central air, being over 100 years old) the electric bill actually increased when the switch was made from window units to central.

Central air, while very nice, can sometimes be very inefficient, and conversely window units can be more efficient because you're generally only cooling the immediate space around you. I have central now, but I have nothing against a good window unit. A/C in general here is a must in the summer, as it regularly can get to be over 100F/38C for days on end. 110F+/43C+ is fairly common too.

I believe Invis missed a letter out, this is in fact a thread about man grooming and hAir conditioner.

Have you finally burnt that beenie and decided to get in touch with you hair Invis? Must be the influence of the consort.

Air conditioning, you are lucky to have it.

Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

Seems like most of Germany is against A/C use. Which, I'm beginning to like. It's pleasant to just open a couple of windows and turn on a few fans. All kinds of cool things to do besides AC. You can open your attic up, and turn on the attic fan. Open certain windows around the house to allow air circulate. You can also use heavier window dressings to not let in the excess heat.

But, the closer to the equator you are, the less effective these become.

What! I love his toque! (Apparently that's Canadian for beenie.) And his hair! Dun mess with it!

On topic: I'm a bit nervous to get my first hydro bill since I've been running this air conditioner in my window. I've never had to pay separate utilities bills before....

its not fixing a part on the compressor, its fully replacing the compressor, getting rid of the old one and what not, though 7k does sound expensive, >.> wonder what the price would be if we were going through a family friend.

Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

My house has central AC but since I am up on the third floor it doesn't do much for me. I close off my vents and use a portable window unit.

The only real downside to window units is that they block a window, and you have to put them in and out for the season changes. I'm hoping to find a place with central when I move in August, but it isn't essential.

The last place I lived in we had our landlord paint the roof white. It really made a huge difference in our electric bill. We managed to survive a Baltimore summer with only the window units in the bedroom running at night. It helped that we spent most of our time in the finished basement though.

If you've never spent a summer here...Oh boy. I drive a convertible with black leather interior. I am totally not looking forward to the hot weather.

Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

AC is a must around here, its staying about 75-80 now, but within 3 weeks, a 90+ day will be cool

we have 100-115 for 2 1/2 months (mid july-late sept) at least im in a semi-arid desert and its a dry heat, but the bad thing is ill be in NC all summer...
Im sweating just thinking about 100 degree, 95% humidity.

Re: The Air Conditioner Thread

I live in the desert, and don't want a $300 electric bill every month this summer for our electric AC. I want to get an evaporative cooler, but have no idea what to look for in one, nor where the hell I can put it -- only windows on the rear of the house are our bedroom windows, and we don't want it on the front. :(
