Disc Priest healer: bad choice for Tankadins?

Main: Priest
Spec: Holy/Disc
QQ: I can't be Holy/ImpDS and get to play with any of the new goodies! Sad

In all honestly, haven't tried pve healing as disc yet, in pvp is it awesome (still), howver I've only played with it on the PTR.

I'm on the fence about the spec I went with http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVhbzhZcxxcf0qihVhoo. I'm not happy about having to spec Desperate Prayer now if I want to keep it. I was human and had my Desperate Prayer and 10% Human Spirit increase. Now I don't get Desperate Prayer (but I'm feeling the new Symbol of Hope) and a measly 3% Human Spirit increase.

/qq

I'll add anything important I may discover about disc pve healing if/when I switch specs.

Wow... so much response, thanks everybody! Laughing

In the meanwhile, my priest wife has decided to stick with Holy / ImpDS, at least for now when we're still leveling. Her build right now is like this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=bVhbkhxkbZcxtcc0aVz, and while she misses out on Serendipity & all those nice clearcast procs, she gets some more mana, regen, and a notable spellpower boost for the entire group. She also picked Lightwell, just to try out the new version of it.

In any case, we've done some SP & UB runs yesterday, and I felt like God. Cool It was actually my 1st tanking experience in the new patch, and I hope this doesn't get nerfed, as this is a completely different level of power & feel of play...

We STEAMED through the SP easily with 4 men (2 mages, my priest and myself), without wiping once. The only time we got feared and the healer got killed, I managed to stand through the whole fight (potion, then DP, then LoH) while the mages finished out the remaining mobs. Threat is completely through the roof, and I'm seriously thinking of respeccing improved devotion aura, just to stay alive a little longer while still having no problems with threat. With 3 or more mobs hitting at me, mana is not an issue at all. The only times I was close to running OOM were one- or two-mob fight, when I didn't get hit much enough to regen via BoSanc, and wasn't hurt enough to replenish mana via SA...

After that, we picked up a warlock and ran UB, much to the same effect.

The new Lightwell is AMAZING. Seriously, it is the best thing happened to a Tankadin in terms of healing. The only moments where it doesn't help are fights that require mobility, such as perhaps Nazan in the Ramps. On nore normal fights, including most multi-mob pulls and tank'n'spank bosses, it can pretty well keep me alive for an indefinite period of time. The priest sets the Lightwell in a good place, much like a shaman does with its totems, and then I pull the victims and start the fight near the well. If you ever played a Tankadin, you probably know that it's not a big deal for us to have to click something every 6 seconds, then pushing Tab to return the target to the mob... Laughing

Bottom line (not to be offtopic): if there were a Disc priest healing me, I guess I wouldn't feel much of a difference in terms of mana and threat. Still, the healing throughput per second is better for a Holy priest (not to mention Lightwell), and when you tank 10-20 mobs without any CC it is it what stands between your group and a wipe. Still then, my wife had no mana issues at all, even without Serendipity...

[quote="LevantineHealing meters are a miserably poor way to judge performance for healers in the best of times unless you know exactly what to look for and where to look for it. Printing out Effective Heal, Overheal and Total Heal only is damn near to useless.[/quote]
So it's raw data that needs a fair bit of interpretation to be of any use?

Viable or not Disc looks like it would be fun as hell to play.

I know blizzard mentioned at one time trying to come up with a way to solve the problem of disc priests bubbles preventing rage generation for warriors and mana regen for pallys. In raids and boss fights I think it's probably not an issue at all but I could see it become more of a problem, particularly for warriors in 5 mans so it'd be nice if they found a way to fix that.

As far as disc priest raid viability, I don't think there's any question that they're viable, especially given the increased importance of imp spirit. However, I think a deep holy priest is still "ideal". It's a similar argument that I see a lot of us making against ourselves, saying that yes, we're viable, but people would still rather have a warrior (I personally think we are competitive with warriors for the MT spot). I could definitely see a lot of people saying "yeah, disc priests are good, but I'd rather have a guardian spirit priest or even a CoH priest who spec'd enough into disc to pick up imp spirit".

Well, I've played a healer role for years. Was a Shaman back in baby WoW, then a short stint in the Alliance as a Druid, then came back to Horde when BC hit to be a Priest.

Yes, I'm Holy, not Disc. I can't seem to get the idea through my head that Shielding a tank is a good thing. And I like having my group heal options...I know tankadins are outstanding, but as good as you guys are, you cannot stop bad DPS from standing in Cleaves/AoEs, etc. Which since I mostly pug Heroics, happens a lot.

The problem with the Disc tree is that we Priests often don't know what to make of it because it's changed functions so many times. It went from being a Holy damage/support tree, to a "why do we have this again?" tree, to a buff bot (Improved DS for the benefit of the raid while gimping your healing, yay) carryon, to an Arena "Dispel bot"/survival spec, and now Blizz has stated that they want it to be a raid main tank heal spec.

Most of the fuss in the Priest community is about Shadow right now, but that's another matter.
Tankadins will be fine with Disc healers. Provided said healer knows how to heal, I doubt it will matter much about which class/spec you have along for your runs.
