[Critique please!] :: An Officers guide to Tankadins

Our Weaknesses
(-) Mana Burn. Mana Burn can seriously hurt our threat generation capacity, especially initial front-loading, as well as increase the damage we take uniquely among the tanking classes.

Our Strengths
(-)Group Composition. While a peripheral benefit, it is still notable that in most cases a tank group will include a Paladin from their auras, regardless of the spec of the Paladin. If a Paladin Tank is employed, they will be bestowing the same auras on the other tanks in the tank group, while freeing up an additional spot for including another utility raid member, such as a Shaman for Windfury Totem or a Druid for their Tree of Life healing increase aura, while still having the same number of total tanks.

Ondage - edited the OP openng paragraph to include your suggestion. Does that seem to cover the basics or did you have any more suggestions? (Updated)

Thanks for all the help so far!

Great start and much needed for many not aware of paladin tanks. I will use your guide for my own guild once complete!

Please emphasize we want to be hit. Most of our threat comes from blocking. Many rogues/warriors/hunter inappropriately stun or disorient, etc the mob preventing us from threat generation.

Our Strengths
(-)CCers Protection. The many ranged threat abilities Paladins enjoy, along with the long-duration static-placement AOE spell Consecration, allow a Paladin to excell in situations where trash or boss adds are being CC'ed. The Paladin can act as protection of the vulnerable CCers by gaining initial aggro on mobs to be CC'ed from long range and providing insurance against accidental CC break or death of the player responsible.
Example: In Tempest Keep: The Eye, there are several pats of Humanoid Falconeers accompanied by large numbers Warhawk Hatchlings which must be cleared to enter A'lar's room. There trash mobs can be Polymorphed, but are dangerous for their charge-knockback ability which also spell-locks the recipient, as well as the large numbers.
On a pull of such a pat, a paladin can place a Consecration static AOE spell in the doorway they must pass through, gaining a small initial aggro on the whole group of Warhawks, absorbing any charges and allowing the mages to easily place their sheeps without harrassment once the group passes through the doorway.

Joanadark - thank you. Your suggestion CC protection strenght is now included. (Updated)

Arizanti - I really like your idea, I'm still considering how to include it so it fits and flows etc. Do you have any suggestions for how to do it? perhaps in the "part 2" i'm about to post... I'm not sure where to fit it yet.

What is the consensus on adding the following into this guide, or putting it in as a "part II" to be posted separately but immediately following the initial portion?

===========

What to expect from a normal trash pull.

Bells and Whistles: The Tankadin should check his buffs and possibly pop a trinket and wings.
Captain America: Next you'll see a small disk fly from the Paladins hand and strike 1 target, it should then bounce to up to 2 more. At this point the mage should sheep, and hunters should begin pulling their traps.
Holy Shield: The Paladin will cast Holy Shield, increasing his block percentage by 35% (with proper Libram) and causing notable threat to any striking attackers.
Holy Ground: The Paladin will want to consecrate whenever possible, even if just once or twice. He will pull the remaining mobs away from the Sheep and the ground around him will light up.
Judgement: The Paladin will judge his preferred seal and re-seal.
Commence DPS: By this point the mobs should have just reached the Paladin and he should have enough of a threat lead to commence DPS. Be aware that Avenger's Shield can miss and things can go wrong. Of course all DPS is checking their meters before engaging though right!

Note: Not all Paladins do these things in the same order and on some pulls Holy Shield may not be needed or Consecrate may deemed too mana inefficient. Overall though these are the things to expect. Paladin tanking is a lot of shiny lights and pretty spells. It's gay, but it's good!

Lonso - I absolutely agree with you. I'll leave it up for the duration of the weekend, but I seriously doubt I'll use it unless lots of people think it should be included.

It's so funny that I didn't see that myself. I've had so many good suggestions and used every one so far. Thanks so much and keep them coming!

The pull you've described there seems somewhat 5-man or Heroic-oriented to me, which is probably not necessary for an "Officers'" guide. In my experience, raid pulls go the same way regardless of what class your MT is.

For the itemization thing - My suggestion would be to just put a rundown of various stats found often on tanking gear and list their importance to a Paladin tank as compared to a Warrior tank. Be sure to note the "luxury" stats (like intellect and agility) and "useless" stats (like strength or mana/5).

I agree with Lonso. Avoid putting a typical pull sequence in this guide. Remember your audience is Guild Leaders and Officers.

I know easier said that done, but try to keep it short & simple. Difficult with all these great cooks in your kitchen!

Sloath - You're exactly right about our reliance on reactive damage. In fact the whole initial motivation for me to write this was my GM wanting me to OT Kara and me realizing how much this would give me mana problems (and subsequently aggro problems) from not taking enough damage.

BoS/HS/Ret Aura are already listed in the guide, however, I will add a weakness to cover how OTing/not taking damage greatly inhibits our mana-regen.
