Ret stats priority changed since patch?

Guys, this is quite off topic but we have a little bit of a dispute with one of our guildys atm and we want to clear things up in reagrds to stat priority for Retri.

Apparently there was a little bit of drama in a raid the other night as one of our pallies, who recently respecc'd Ret, rolled on some spell power gear which the clothies were none too happy about.
I didn't attend that raid but there is a discussion on our guild forums which I got drawn into as I 'thought' I knew what I was talking about Wink - in point that Ret should be stacking Strength not Spell Power as it scales better etc.

Have things changed since patch that Ret's are now stacking Spell power? - our pally is adamant that it works for him and is upset that he feels like we are picking on him and don't know what we're talking about.

Bear in mind we a semi-casual raiding guild looking to go more hardcore in WOTLK so people rolling on stuff to suit screwy specs and gearing is not really what we are about, even this late in TBC.

If he's right then I'll hold my hands up and back him, but it goes against everything I've ever read or been told.

Any Retadin who stacks spellpower is, and always will be a moron. In fact it's become even less necessary since 3.0 now that a good portion of your attack power converts directly into spellpower.

Get hit capped, stack Strength, AP and Crit. The end.

Things that scale with SP:
-Consecrate
-Hammer of Wrath (I think)

Things that scale with AP:
-White damage
-Seal of Blood
-Judgement of Blood
-Crusader Strike
-Divine Storm
-Consecrate
-Hammer of Wrath

Ret pallys get SP from AtkP, if he is rolling on SP gear, and using it on his ret suit he is gimping his dps, and should go learn more about his class.
Link his armory and we can tell better if he is not gearing right or just being greedy with off spec loot. There are alot of people playing ret now since its facerollable(made up?) and so its possible if he didn't play ret prefacerollable patch that he has no clue what he is doing and is just going on advice of another retardin.

The worth of Haste has gone down a bit, as Autoattack and Seal damage is not such a big portion of a Ret's damage anymore. Same goes for Armor Penetration, a smaller percentage of the total damage is physical now.

Also, some Plate items may now beat their equilavent progression Leather/Mail items (which some of were better for a Retadin pre-patch) with Divine Strenght now giving 5% more STR.

It's a bit unclear if the hit rating needed to reach the hit cap is currently 142 or 95 for Paladins. Most of the hit chance tests in the Ret thread on EJ show Paladins gaining an extra 3% hit chance (Precision) out of nowhere, with no gear on, no Seal or Aura on, and also untalented and unbuffed. It appears to be either
1. a "Paladin racial" (a bug?)
2. Paladins who had the Precision talent pre-patch still gain the hit chance from it, which is more likely because some testers who were Holy pre-patch didn't notice the surprisingly high hit chance.

Would have thought that now with Divine storm as armor mitigated, ArP wouldn´t lose that much even if judgements do hit quite alot more now.

EDIT: Then again we´ll in a moment get that "Dot" instead of increased critical damage in our talent tree so that´ll change things again in some way or another.

thanks guys, clear and to the point - thats what i like about this site Smile

I'm not gonna link his armory though as:

1) he switches between holy and ret so i couldn't say which spec he was alst time he logged out (incidentally i did wonder if that's why he was after the spll power gear as maybe he uses some screwy ret\holy spec for pvp\arena) *shrug

2) he is a guildy and generally a nice guy so (despite his apparent misguidedness) I'm not really intrested in naming and shaming Wink

Appreciate the feedback though and at least I feel better in that i wasn;t juts talking out of my @rse and it gives us something to reason with him

with the double scaling, yeah spell power *works*. Doesn't mean it's adequate.

Most ret abilities scale based on weapon damage, in which SP has no effect at all. Seals and consecration scale more or less equally with sp and ap. Difference of course is that you can get much more ap than you can get sp(specially from str where instead of 1 sp, if you get 1 str you're getting 2.3 ap before buffs). And all str/ap (remember, 1 str = 2 ap for pallies) becomes sp with Sheath of Light.

Long story short, ap, and specially strength, are badass stats for ret pallies.

As for hit. I'm at 93 hit rating (5.9%, add another 1% for draenei racial), and last night in Kara recount said I "missed" only two times.
