PvP - Question about what is considered decent stats?

I'm sorry, this is the only site I can access at work that isn't blocked. I know this isn't a pally question, so please forgive me. Embarassed

I was running around in BGs last night (though I had a 30 minute delay due to BGs being down) on my arcane mage. I was generally in the top three in terms of damage being done/kills/honor. He's a level 68 without any resilience gear, some really stupid enchants/knothide armor (because they were cheap), and about 550 spell power.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Zangarmarsh&n=jhendrix (last time I checked, it was not updated so there could be a lot of stuff missing)

However, I'm very new to PvP. I have no idea what is considered decent damage being done/kills/honor. I generally put out about 140k/15 killing blows/300-400 honor in AB (the only BG I know so it's the only one I play as of right now). Since he's alliance, we generally don't win, but that's okay, it's still lots of fun.

I'm thinking about killing time until Wotlk gets here and doing PvP with all my characters including my pally and have him dabble in Ret.

Every now and then, I'll see a hunter with a crazy number like 220k with no deaths. I've also seen a pally that had 420k damage. Go Ret!!!

Any PvP players out there that know what one should be shooting for? (keep in mind that I'm not in the 70 bracket and I'm not doing AV although I know I should)

I only know Ret, so I'll give info on that.

First thing to remember is that you won't have awesome stats to start, you gotta build your gear up.

Also, keep in mind that for PVP, your Attack power won't be as high as a full out PVE set as you have to sacrifice itemization points for more Stamina and Resilience.

Rough numbers for starting stats:
with 5 in Divine Strength, anything over 1700AP should be good for starters (I got about 1900)
25% crit is a good baseline number, I'm at about 31% currently.
As much Stamina and Resilience as you can muster

Stat priorities are Stamina, Reslilience, Strength/AP, and crit rating.

Always gem for strength (Bold Living Ruby), unless you need other hybrids to make metagem requirements. Any hybrids with Str/crit or Str/STA would suffice.

For any class, easiest route if you're lacking gear is to first get your reputation PVP blues from the rep vendors. After that, start honor grinding for S2 gear, as well as all the Vindicator/Guardian non-set gear that doesn't require an arena rating. Your weapon is your most important piece, so if you don't have a good one already, grind for the S2 version first.

And you already said it, start learning how to PVP in other BG's. If you want to PVP, you need the gear. Most of that gear requires marks from all of the BG's, with AV also giving the most honor possible. Read up on how it works and just go do it, it's fun!

um...in BG's, trying to be "top damage" or "top kills" is not EVER the best practice. Learning to play the BG is more important, because after all, if you win, you get more honor.

I'd rather hear you got 5 flag caps or something.

Thanks for the advice. I usually get 2 flag caps and 1 defended in AB. I'll keep on working on that part. I always seem to get stunlocked by those pesky rogues!

I think I have the reputation/honor for two of the PvP blues. I'll have to work on getting some more. I'm focusing on AB right now because there are two Merciless Gladiator items from that BG (plus I find it to be the most fun with short games).

Your first Honor purchase should be a PVP trinket.

Then, for a mage, try for 10k health and 400 resilience to start off with. Gem for stam/resil, not spellpower. After you start to approach those health/resil numbers, start upping your spellpower.

Really you're only asking about gems, since ALL the good pvp gear has stam, resil, and SP.

Also, respec to frost... it'll be a lot easier. You don't even need to worry about gemming for crit since Shatter straight up gives you 50%. That said, don't buy dreadweave, buy silk. You may not GEM for crit but you certianly want it on your gear.

I am a human so I use my racial whenever it's available.

I'll look into the blue PvP stuff and see where that gets me.

However, what do you mean by getting silk instead of dreadweave? Do you mean the Evoker's silk battlegear? Thanks again for all the tips.

I know frost is great, however, I'm having a great time with arcane. I might see how it goes for a little and then try out frost later.

By the staff you mean, http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32055, right?

I'm sorry for all the questions. I'm just new to the PvP side of things.

I don't have any arena points and I'm not interested in playing arena. I'll stick with the Vindicator's Silk Cuffs http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33913.

After those three and the staff, what else would you recommend on your list of gear?

/salute

I'll look into frost. I leveled with it and wanted to try something else. I don't think I'm special with POM. But it is fun!
