Ulduar 10 completed in all blues group

Ran across this article today on greedygoblin.blogspot.com. Gevlon and his guild completed all of Ulduar 10 normal modes wearing nothing but BLUE gear, not a single epic on them.

http://greedygoblin.blogspot.com/2009/08/ungeared.html

Makes me want to tell the tards who go "whisper me your epic gearscore in order to get invited to Naxx25/VoA" to get bent and learn to stop sucking.

Like has been said on here many times, yet many people still don't get it:

SKILL > GEAR

Discuss.

Going back and clearing content you've farmed for months and know the mechanics inside and out of, with a guild of people who you know can execute the content and who won't leave after the second wipe, in low-quality gear is not the same as looking for random strangers in trade channel and lfg to try and fill your pug.

bolded the part that goes against the point begin made by the article. it's just that if you're good, you don't need top notch gear. if you're pugging somebody, it's EXTREMELY likely that they don't know the fights well and/or just plain suck. hell i even gave up on doing regular toc for my alts because gear isn't enough to show 'hey this dude is fail'. not worth the time and repairs.

I thought they killed Illidan and then posed beside him in their T3 to simply show they had cleared all content? Or I could be getting that wrong hehe, it was a long time ago.

Nice on the all blues though, good job.

They killed him in roughly one month after TBC was released in China , since they went so fast through the instances by the time they got Illidan they still had quite a good number of tier 3 pieces.

Re: Ulduar 10 completed in all blues group

Well there's been some hefty nerfs in ulduar since it's release so i'm not suprised that now a skilled group can manage this. Most of the fights are pretty tame in regards to required dps if done correctly (ie, you could probably do hodir with green geared dps if they know how to use all the buffs). I'm impressed mostly with their healers as the additional strain of low geared tanks as well as limited mana pools/output would undoubtedly show on some fights, I guess it just goes to show how much healing and mana is wasted as you gear up if you are a more spam and less precise healer.

Still it hammers home the skill > gear point nicely of course I imagine alot of idiots to misinterpret it and think they can go and do ulduar in blues as soon as they level 80, but then those are the people that make pugs so hilarious...

I thought Gevlon just paid to get run through raids anyhow.

Re: Ulduar 10 completed in all blues group

That's an awesome link. I'm going to point my guild at it to drive the skill > gear point home. Being a newly formed guild, we're just starting Uld, and too many folks think we're undergeared. :\

Was a fun read.

I have to agree on the part about their healers, must have been some very precise cooldown usage from both the tanks and the healers to make it through. I think the most crucial part of them making it through would be to absolutely minimise raid damage taken. I've never really scrutinized our "damage taken" meters, but I bet I'd be blown away at how much extra healing and mana is wasted on people standing in the fire.

Re: Ulduar 10 completed in all blues group

Sure, its obvious that skill > gear. But they're players who've cleared it before, correct? Plus I'm sure for every skilled player who gets rejected for not having epic into a pug, theres two that are truely awful.

No. No no no.

They were posing for that screenshot. Do you realize how terrible tier 3 was compared to the gear available from... everywhere else at that point? They would've been better off farming level 70 blues. Not only would they not have the DPS to actually pull it off, but they wouldn't have the tanking survivability to do it either.

No, I guarantee you that none of them wore a single piece of Tier 3 during their Illidan kill... or any kill after Karazhan. If they cleared the content that fast, you can be damned sure that they invested time in gearing up through 5-mans and heroics. I mean... two full fire resistance tanks were still required at that point in the game, which required about 100 badges of justice each. Do you honestly think they were wearing tier 3 pieces after farming that many heroics? No.

This man has a point. T3 was so poorly itemized that you would probably be better off in lvl 70 blues and quest drops. This was the expansion, after all, where the first 10 quests in HFP replaced some T2 epics.

That said, this is about skill being more important than gear. It's not saying that gear doesn't matter entirely, and it's not saying that you shouldn't screen your PUGs. What he's saying is that being "ungeared" is not a valid excuse. If you aren't clearing Ulduar it is because you aren't skilled enough--part of which is experience with the encounters--and it is not because you simply need to gear up more.

Also, a huge part of being skilled is knowing what stats to stack at different tiers of play. Picking the right stats is particularly important when you have a limited item budget.

Re: Ulduar 10 completed in all blues group

You guys are wildly overstating how bad T3 was. It was probably bad for tanks yes, because of the stamina rebudgeting. Other classes, not so much. I wore T3 well past karazan. Our early (pre-nerf) Gruul and (pre-nerf) Hydross kills all had me and another hunter in 6 piece T3 outdamaging the majority of the rest of the raid, because the mana regen from the set bonus was amazing, while the stats were comparable to T4 epics.

Then they finally buffed karazan gear, and we got T5 too, so it became less worth wearing T3.

My T3 was excellently itemized.

edit: and no, there wasn't a single piece from hellfire even close to replacing any of my level 60 raiding gear. I think the first pieces I replaced were a cloak and ring and bow in the mid-late 65's. Oh, and Bladefist's breath replaced blackhand's breath.
