Str vs SP

I was tanking a Azjol run reccently and a ret pally told me that we were
no longer going for sp on a weapon, rather to stack str. This has been
the third time or so that someone has told me this and I was wondering
what the reason was behind this.

Because it's true.

that is a very astute remark, any particular reasoning behind it?

All Paladin abilities scale with (for the most part, equally) SP and AP in Wrath.

1 Str = 2.53 AP for the same budgeting as 1 SP, as well as increasing your Block Value at a ratio of 1 Str = 0.63 BV for Shield of Righteousness threat.

You'll notice that there is no Spell Power tanking plate in the game anymore, as well.

Hammer of the Righteous also scales directly with weapon DPS modified by AP, Spell Power not only has zero impact on this, SP weapons have much (much) lower weapon DPS than nonSP weapons of the same iLvl.

That isn't really the short of it.

The short: Most abilities scale 1:1 with AP:SP. 1 STR = 2 AP. Ergo 1 STR = 2 SP before talents. After 15% STR and 10% Kings, 1 STR = 2.53 SP. Then some abilities such as HotR do not scale with SP, so 1 STR is better than any amount of SP for them.

The really REALLY short of it:

Gearing for spellpower is an BC era method of pally tank gearing. It is now rendered completely obsolete with the new 3.0/wotlk mechanics. If you have a SINGLE piece of gear with spellpower on it, you are gearing for BC mechanics and talents where WOTLK talents and mechanics will not work for it. 3.0 was a massive change for the paladin class, and old ways of thought no longer apply.

Gear like a warrior tank now, to the letter. It is the new, correct way to do it based on recent changes.
