aleyona's WOTLK Boss Tanking Gear Progression List Discussio

NEW SYSTEM

I will be updating this list soon based off some expected gearing. This gearing will fall into three categories and the gear associated with it is all that will be counted. Journey, Adventure, Heroism, and Valor will be the three categories (loosely associated to the emblem). When Patch 3.1 comes out, I will add in additional categories, or add newer items into already existing categories (as well as patches in the future).

How the new rating system works. All the items in the group will be added up collectively and an average will be determined (for each item slot) - Trinkets are excluded in this system. These items will then be added up to determine what stats a character would currently have excluding the piece they are looking to replace. That item would then be compared to other items in its category to determine in which order the items give the best benefit.
It is slighty difficult to explain until I work out the exacts of it, but the idea is - If you are already very close to block cap, an item with 33 block rating is just as good as one with 500 - so anything past that point would essentially be discounted as useless. If the parry you have is already over 200, an item with a large amount of parry would be worth less than one with equal or slightly less dodge percentage.

I welcome comments on my proposed new system.

OLD SYSTEM

For the old system, values were placed on item stats weighting some stats more than others. As this is a main tanking set, all factors were considered including a minute amount of added for threat stats (str, expertise, hit). Strength was also considered as part of EH/mitigation due to the 1:2 ratio for block value. Compared to more critical stats like defense, dodge, and parry the value of these threat stats was almost insignificant. In a few cases the threat/mitigation made a difference in the victor.

This is an in-progress list I'm putting together to provide some idea of progression for WOTLK tanking gear. This is by no means perfect (or complete atm) and is based mostly on my own personal rating scheme (which is backed up by math as well in many cases).

Key things to remember - this is not the be-all end all, and more often than not what fills the holes in your tanking set is best. If you have any advice, feel free to comment, I won't be offended.

The Golden Assumption
All theory crafting is inherently flawed because you cannot create a linear guide that will work for every situation. The individuals who read these guides are living breathing human beings with a brain of their own. They have the knowledge and capacity to understand that said guide will not always work. They have the ability to adapt and overcome these predicaments on their own and do not need to be spoon fed every possible variable involved.

Weapon

Shield

Helm

Neckpiece

Shoulders

Cloak

Chestpiece

Wrist

Hands

Waist

Legs

Feet

Ring

Trinket

I have worked out trinkets into avoidance / EH & Mitigation groups. I have not added threat, because I believe the EH/avoidance is worth more than any minor threat from a trinket. Please note that some items are listed into two categories because they can fulfill multiple roles.

Avoidance Trinkets

Effective Health / Mitigation

***** Since a JC can only have 3 JC only gems at a time, a more realistic choice for this would be 2x41 stam gems, with a 24 stamina gem in the blue socket of the monarch crab. I have only added this as an option for those who want to see it.

Miscellaneous - Combined based the two trinkets would add a total of 290 stamina. If used for stamina/avoidance, 144 stamina and 97 dodge would be the total. The only better combination is Monarch crab (2x27 dodge) and Indestructible Alchemist stone, for a total of 147 stamina and 104 dodge. Monarch crab + Valor medal of the First war would provide 113 stamina and 111 dodge.

The Massive Skeletal Ribcage drops in Naxx off Sapphiron, not in OS.

I definately prefer this one over the current one due to this one being updated, The disclaimer is def, important although if it was numbered more like the BC gear progression item list, where some items were ranked together as second, small change and not very important just my own preference.

GJ, always liked these :-) For easier finding of such items, lootrank may help :> I'm using this link sometimes, and i always adjust the values of each stat once i reach desired value of this or that, may be pretty helpful thingy, just if you know what stat to weight how much. It helps to keep me my MT set kinda balanced on avoidance/mitigation/stam (oh yeah i do think 26,5k unbuffed is enough, and i can swap trinkets on malygos).

Not like it was an ultimate "take this item it's #1 in tha wurldz", but it's good to know what's available out there ^^

After going through all the math stuff to figure out what's best, I was surprised to find out how many of my own choices for 'best in slot' were off.

Ratanna's setup and mine were about even in the end; she suprised me with how right she was about the Monarch crab. At the same time I was also amazed to see the Alchemist's stone being so powerful a trinket (Even the Guardian's Alchemist Stone is extremely high.)

Anyways, If you guys have some input let me know.

The Gale-Proof Cloak drops from normal Sartharion with 1 add up, not heroic.

You might want to retitle this "boss tanking" list or something to that effect. As before, there's a different ideal for trash as there is for bosses. Also, for dragons, you basically want to stack hitpoints.

So, there isn't a straightforward priority like this implies. If you retitled it, I think it might find more support.

Agreed, especially since it beats out a number of weapons on the list, just barely edging out the Blade of the Empty Void imo
