4.3 Gem GuideDigren says, "
Remember, use survival gems on your survival gear, and threat gems on your threat gear. Then wear all of one set, all of the other, or a mix as necessary."
"Gemming for Dummies"Okay, at this point mastery has won. For survival gear, push your combat table coverage as high as possible, limiting your damage intake to 60% of an otherwise "full hit". From the tabular mastery/avoidance data, you can see that avoidance ratings are typically worth about 36% of the value of mastery rating for pushing full hits off your combat table. This means mastery wins out nearly all the time.
Stamina is still good, to the minimum required for your tank stage. It's valued at 66% of mastery rating so you still have some choice for gems.
Many people follow the general gear strategy to
- Gear for the stamina minimum for their tank stage, then
- Stack mastery to reduce damage taken, then
- If you reach the block cap, switch back to stacking stamina.
For targets for the stamina "minimum" at each stage, see the appropriate stage in the
gear guide.
Even with this strategy, though, gem choices can vary from nearly-pure stamina to nearly-pure mastery (all while matching good bonuses). Why? It varies so much because it depends on the tank's overall gear and content stage. Whether or not the tank has zero, one, or two stamina trinkets is a big factor. Whether the tank has purchased a lot of epics to reach the stamina minimum (or must rely on gems) is another.
Here are three possible, possibly equally viable, gem strategies:
Stamina Heavy
Red Slot (with really good* bonus) : [Defender's Shadow Spinel] : +25 Parry Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Blue or Colorless Slot (all**) : [Solid Deepholm Iolite] : +75 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Yellow Slot (with good bonus) : [Puissant Elven Peridot] : +25 Mastery Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
* A really good bonus is more than 13 mastery rating or 20 stamina tied to a single non-blue slot
** including all slots with poor socket bonuses
Mastery Heavy
Red Slot (with really good* bonus) : [Fine Lava Coral] : +25 Parry Rating and +25 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
Blue Slot (with good** bonus) : [Puissant Elven Peridot] : +25 Mastery Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Yellow or Colorless Slot (all***) : [Fractured Lightstone] : +50 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
* A really good bonus is more than 13 mastery rating or 20 stamina tied to a single non-yellow slot
** A good bonus is 10 or more mastery rating or 15 or more stamina tied to a single non-yellow slot
*** including all slots with poor socket bonuses
Middle-of-the-Road
Red Slot (with a really good* bonus) : either [Fine Lava Coral] or [Defender's Shadow Spinel] depending on health versus recommended minimum
Blue or Yellow or Colorless Slot (all**) : [Puissant Elven Peridot]*** : +25 Mastery Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
* A really good bonus is more than 13 mastery rating or 20 stamina tied to a single non-blue slot
** including all slots with poor socket bonuses
*** or consider equal quantity pure-stamina and pure-mastery gems in color-appropriate slots, if those cost less
This guide recommends the Mastery-Heavy strategy, but provides options for all. Tanks that have reached the block cap should use one of the other strategies to increase stamina at the expense of unneeded mastery.
How to Understand This GuideThe available options have been ordered and marked for recommendation. Survivability and threat gems are individually marked. The "best of the best" are highlighted in
bold. Finally, tips are provided to help explain the selections and provide links to relevant theory.
Best for survivability.
Best for threat (when building a threat set).
When to Match Socket ColorsIn general, tanks need both effective health and avoidance+block to increase their survivability. Matching socket bonuses yields the most "points" per item. Moreover, most socket bonuses in Cataclysm gear are pretty good. Thus,
- Match a yellow socket bonuses when the bonus is 10 or more points of survivability or 15 or more points of stamina. Match a red socket bonus when the bonus is 13 or more points of mastery rating or 20 or more points of stamina, or if a red gem is required to unlock a meta.
Survival GemsMeta Gem Slot- [Austere Shadowspirit Diamond] : +81 Stamina and +2% Armor from Items : Jewelcrafting
- [Eternal Shadowspirit Diamond] : +81 Stamina and +1% Block Value : Jewelcrafting
- [Effulgent Shadowspirit Diamond] : +81 Stamina and -2% Spell Damage Taken : Jewelcrafting
- [Powerful Shadowspirit Diamond] : +81 Stamina and -10% Stun Durationg : Jewelcrafting
- [Fleet Shadowspirit Diamond] +54 Mastery Rating and +8% Movement Speed : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "With no defense gem, this list pretty much boils down to stamina and something, where something is 2% armor, 1% shield block value, or 2% reduced spell damage. For physical, blockable damage, 1% block value reduces incoming damage more than 2% armor once your avoidance+block is about 85%."
Blue Gem Slot- [Solid Chimera's Eye] : +101 Stamina : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Puissant Elven Peridot] : +25 Mastery Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Solid Deepholm Iolite] : +75 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Puissant Dream Emerald] : +20 Mastery Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Solid Ocean Sapphire] : +60 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Puissant Jasper] : +18 Mastery Rating and +26 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Solid Zephyrite] : +53 Stamina : No longer possible to create
- [Puissant Jasper] : +15 Mastery Rating and +23 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Solid Zephyrite] : +45 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "That's right. I no longer recommend pure stamina gems in blue or colorless slots. Mastery is that good. Using Puissant gems in blue, slots with a good socket bonus."
Yellow Gem Slot or Colorless Gem Slot or red gem slot with a poor bonus- [Fractured Chimera's Eye] : +67 Mastery Rating : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Fractured Lightstone] : +50 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Fractured Amberjewel] : +40 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Puissant Elven Peridot] : +25 Mastery Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Puissant Dream Emerald] : +20 Mastery Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Subtle Chimera's Eye] : +67 Dodge Rating : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Regal Elven Peridot] : +25 Dodge Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Regal Dream Emerald] : +20 Dodge Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Subtle Lightstone] : +50 Dodge Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Subtle Amberjewel] : +40 Dodge Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Puissant Jasper] : +18 Mastery Rating and +26 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Regal Jasper] : +18 Dodge Rating and +26 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Fractured Alicite] : +35 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Subtle Alicite] : +35 Dodge Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Puissant Jasper] : +15 Mastery Rating and +23 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Regal Jasper] : +15 Dodge Rating and +23 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Fractured Alicite] : +30 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Subtle Alicite] : +30 Dodge Rating : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "With mastery rating better than dodge rating for overall damage reduction, Fractured gems are perfect (and cheap, too). I recommend the same gem for all yellow and colorless gems slots to simplify gem strategy. Jewelcrafters can use their mastery gems for an extra boost."
Red Gem Slot with a good socket bonus, or when required for meta activation
- [Fine Lava Coral] : +25 Parry Rating and +25 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Defender's Shadow Spinel] : +25 Parry Rating and +37 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Fine Ember Topaz] : +20 Parry Rating and +20 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Defender's Demonseye] : +20 Parry Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Flashing Queen's Garnet] : +50 Parry Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Flashing Chimera's Eye] : +67 Parry Rating : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Flashing Inferno Ruby] : +40 Parry Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Defender's Nightstone] : +18 Parry Rating and +26 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Fine Hessonite] : +18 Parry Rating and +17 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Perfect Flashing Carnelian] : +35 Parry Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Defender's Nightstone] : +15 Parry Rating and +23 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Fine Hessonite] : +15 Parry Rating and +15 Mastery Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Flashing Carnelian] : +30 Parry Rating : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "Agility's days as a survival stat are over, because it no longer provides armor and provides just 61% as much dodge benefit as dodge rating. I've removed agility gems from consideration. If you don't meet the baseline stamina required for your tank stage, use parry/stamina gems in your high-socket-bonus red slots (if any), or just pure stamina gems. If your stamina is sufficient to survive, use pure mastery gems to minimize damage taken."
Cogwheel Gem Slot (Yay engineering!)- [Fractured Cogwheel] : +208 Mastery Rating : Engineering Only
- [Subtle Cogwheel] : +208 Dodge Rating : Engineering Only
- [Flashing Cogwheel] : +208 Parry Rating : Engineering Only
Digren says, "The mastery 'gem' is the best choice for survivability, but the cogwheel is unique-equipped. Engineers, for your second cogwheel slot, select the cogwheel that will boost the lesser of your dodge or parry percentage, as it should yield the higher overall effect due to diminishing returns."
Threat GemsMeta Gem Slot- [Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond] : +54 Critical Strike Rating and +3% Critical Damage : Jewelcrafting
- [Enigmatic Shadowspirit Diamond] : +54 Critical Strike Rating and 10% Reduced Snare / Root Duration : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "It's not likely that many threat sets will include a helm. A notable exception, though, is an engineer's threat set, because he or she can regem the meta and cogwheel slots for threat."
Blue Gem Slot or Colorless Gem Slot (including all slots where the socket bonus is poor)- [Rigid Chimera's Eye] : +67 Hit Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Rigid Ocean Sapphire] : +40 Hit Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Solid Chimera's Eye] : +101 Stamina : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Solid Ocean Sapphire] : +60 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
- [Accurate Demonseye] : +20 Expertise Rating and +20 Hit Rating : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "The conflict between hit rating and stamina is difficult to resolve. Even tanks in full threat gear need some amount of stamina. I recommend:
- First try to reach the hit soft cap through other means, then
- Only if necessary use pure hit rating gems to reach the cap, then
- Use stamina gems in any remaining blue slots in your threat gear.
"
Red Gem Slot (with a good socket bonus)- [Precise Chimera's Eye] : +67 Expertise Rating : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Precise Inferno Ruby] : +40 Expertise Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Accurate Demonseye] : +20 Expertise Rating and +20 Hit Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Guardian's Demonseye] : +20 Expertise Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "Expertise is the best threat option for red gem slots. It's also fine to combine expertise with hit rating or stamina, as you prefer."
Yellow Gem Slot (with a good socket bonus)- [Smooth Chimera's Eye] : +67 Critical Strike Rating : BoP Jewelcrafting
- [Smooth Amberjewel] : +40 Critical Strike Rating : Jewelcrafting
- [Jagged Dream Emerald] : +20 Critical Strike Rating and +30 Stamina : Jewelcrafting
Digren says, "There aren't many good options for threat gems in yellow slots."
Cogwheel Gem Slot (Yay engineering!)- [Precise Cogwheel] : +208 Expertise Rating : Engineering Only
- [Rigid Cogwheel] : +208 Hit Rating : Engineering Only
- [Smooth Cogwheel] : +208 Critical Strike Rating : Engineering Only
Digren says, "The ability to completely customize an easy-to-acquire helm for threat makes it likely that engineers will include a helm in their threat set. The expertise rating cogwheel is a given. If possible redesign your threat set to make use of this hit rating under the melee soft cap."
