New Member, New Tank - Many Questions

I personally have never used SoV to tank, and I've never had a reason to switch to SoV from SoR. It's probably just me, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using SoV to tank, except maybe Karazhan where we can use Exorcism as well, so I would probably say its a personal preference.

Being Horde, I cant speak from experience, but from what I understand, SoR is more of a threat curve instead of constant threat, but there is less chance of loosing a stack and loosing some threat, SoV really shines when you get a slower weapon, and a bit of Hit/Expertise to guarantee a constant threat level.

New Question - After researching and rereading the stickies a lot...I have a question about avoidance and block. I think I know the answer, but want it confirmed.

at 490 defence - Miss is 10%
with holy shield and libram- Block +35%

so, dodge, parry, block should add up to (102.4 - 10 - 35) 57.4 to be uncrushable. Right? so its AFTER I get 57.4 in these that I can start stacking stam right? And dodge is the most prefered/easiest to get right?

You forgot any Block Rating you have, which adds to this.

Avoidance = Dodge+Parry, but for Uncrushability's sake, Block % is factored in to hit that 102.4%

After this, yes, STam becomes the preferred stat, because it will increase your survivability far more than more avoidance, as will more Armor

The following Macro will total it for you:

/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 combined avoidance. Currently at:",0.8,0.8,1)
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance()+GetParryChance()+5+(GetCombatRating(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL)*150/355 + 20)*0.04,1,0.5,0)

I'll give the advice nobody ever likes hearing:

Try to find bad PUGs.

Nothing helps your skill more than trying disparately to save a bad PUG.

All those people who got on your ignore list for wiping runs repeatedly - whisper them and offer to tank a heroic that has no drops you need (because you know they'll ninja loot you anyway).

I have learned so much leveling around noobs that would use taunts on me, run with pets on growl, mage-tanks (mage that shields and runs into melee with arcane explosion -BEFORE- the pull), rogues that sap the mob I am meleeing, priests that bubble me, and so on...

Now, when I get an even half-bad PUG 3 levels higher than me, I can tank an instance at -their- level.

Well, now that I dinged 68, I guess that claim is cut to 2 levels higher than me... But I hope the idea is clear... if the PUG is to survive bad play, the people with good play have to be twice as good as normal.

So PUG with bad players can really teach you how to get on top of your game. When you then go bad to you circle of good players, they'll love you for it.

Yes, but I prefer learning by force of having to first, and then seeing it done right.

Either way, the worst thing at least a leveling tankadin can do is get run through content and hand held into the process. As the tank you are front and center and you need to know how to play this game on your own and not through anyone else as when you get to finally maintanking, everyone else will be expecting you to be holding their hands - rightly or wrongly.

I disagree - I have run Durn quite a bit recently and all the wipes from idiotic DPS make me want to respec holy.

Working with idiots doesn't make you a better tank - it justs sets you up for more grinding/repairs/wasted life.

A pally tank imo is sooo easy to play when DPS relax and cruise with you, chain pulling and going through efficiently and steadily is soooo much faster than losing a mage every pull and wiping every 2nd one cos healer had to heal all the dps and got too much aggro then taunt only works for a few secs cos idiot dps keep hitting any mob but skull.

Flag that Confused

Then again - I actually put a lot of effort into been a decent tank all the way from level 20 and geared accordingly... Razz

All good advice...thanks

By the way, I got the tankadin mod. I like how it tells me my defence and each stat...but one question. The -83.51% (Still holy) is the BAD part, and I am uncrushable when that is positive right? so I dont want this big red number on my tankadin UI right? I just keep stacking avoidance till this is good with my holy shield up right?

SoV > SoR, pretty much any time any place. As long as you can deal with the occasional bad luck thing.

PPM sucks, bliz.
