What did I do wrong?

I know alot of people have special bars and macros and all sorts of funky macros to work with marking, but the simplest way I've found is to just bind them 1-8 on F1-F8. The exception being that 8 (skull) is F1 and 1 (star) is F8 (use it the least anyway).

I just say at the beginning of an instance, Skull is first target, cross is the second target, I'll call for CC and mark it, if its necessary, otherwise, please don't. No need to make it more complicated then that.

One thing though, its good to be consistent with your markings, in single instances, and across your WoWing in general. There are general conventions for most of them, but no set thing, but its good to have your own personal set that you always use. For example, with me, Skull is dps, Cross is always the next target (not off-tank), moon is always sheep, star is always sap. Pink diamond is usually a market for myself, so the group can see where I'm going on LoS pulls - you wouldn't believe how useful this can be. Plus, paladins are pink anyway. Smile

Also, F1 and F2 beign first and second targets means its much easier, and quicker, to change targets mid fight, which can be essential in fights that consist of waves of enemies.

I heard that the number pad is a good place, but I'm not sure I agree with Num Lock changing what the keys do. I have mine bound to Y and [.

Y = Skull
Ctrl+Y = Star
Shift+Y = Diamond
Alt+Y = Moon
[ = X
Ctrl+ [ = Square
Shift+ [ = Triangle
Alt + [ = Circle

I think that's right... so I just use those two keys and the modifiers for all my marking needs.

Thanks again for the replies.

I did try the numpad but I am left handed and use the arrow keys to move around, and it considers various keys on the numpad as arrow keys sadly. Was a bit of an "Oh sh.." moment when I was getting attacked and couldn't move in Redridge Embarassed

Hopefully I can get into the Stockade tonight. Should be fun.

I was checking through some of the other threads on this page and I have to say in response to this:

My macros mark skull on whatever I am currently cycling my rotations upon.

I use X for whatever I consider to be '2d in kill order.'

I use circle to denote Pats that are at risk of coming into our current or planned path of movement.

I will use moon and square if I am ever calling for DPS - which means I almost never use these.

I use the other marks as needed to denote things around corners or otherwise semi hidden that I want to keep an eye on to avoid an over pull, as the marks often show partly through obstructions.

Question about that macro:

Isn't that just the same as pressing the button on the actionbar for RD? I'm new to macros so can't really spot the difference.

The thing about the 'naked' RD button is when you hit it with the mob targeted, you THEN have to select a player to fire it. The macro shortcut makes it so that if you're on a mob & it turns on a dps'er, it fires on the target-of-target automatically - the dps'er in this case, in one motion. This cuts your work in half for 95% of RD situations.
In the case of multiple mobs where you have one & another gets on a squishy, the macro functions like the raw button. You get 'blue-hand' and click the victim or their party panel bar.

Thank you. That does sound very useful and I'll add it to my macros tomorrow.
