Marking - what's it all mean? (what icons for what?)

Kill skull, then call for AE! Razz

We call the orange circle "the nipple" and we use it to its fullest comedic value.

Wow, 3 pages of stuff already on this. Smile

Thanks folks, I'm going to digest this all and come up with a scheme for myself.

Tonight in a BRD run ( - - - L O N G - - - ) I used Skull and X and without saying what I was up to the PUGlies went with what I was hoping for, so those two seem pretty universal.

For me, kill order is;

Skull, X, Diamond, Circle, Square, Triangle

Moon = Sheep
Star = Shackle

I'll chime in again. Smile

Unless I am specifically asking for CC on a target, I tend not to mark more than 1st/second kill targets. When there are other priority targets e.g., Shattered Hand Marksmen, or casters among a melee pack), I will often mark those as secondary targets (well, for SH -- the skull is reserved for the guy that has to die to prevent summoning more Wink)

If I only have 1-2 targets, it makes it more clear that I want to focus on those, and then you can do Whatever on the rest.

As a raid leader the kill order is whatever I say the kill order is. I prefer to keep tank targets consistant and modify kill order to suit the situation. IMO having dps start on the wrong target is generally better than a tank picking up the wrong target.

That being said...star/circle/purple tend to be tank targets, moon/square/triangle tend to be CC targets, and I try not to use skull other than to mark pats on trash as it's frequently used by boss mods.

Heh, we use a completely different setup in raids. We set our hunter as MT #5, and use him as damage assist. If you need something over the damage target's head, look for the big red arrow... or punch the /assist hunter macro. EDIT: Ok, so while I was posting that someone with the same concept said more or less what I am, haha.

Star, circle, diamond, and triangle are targets that will actively be tanked. They're assigned to the same people every raid (IE: I get star, Morteunious gets circle, etc).

The next 3 icons (moon, square, X) are divided amongst the mages and warlocks. If it's a demon, the corresponding warlock banishes it. If it's a human or beast, the corresponding mage polymorphs it. The moon also doubles as the SP mind control target.

Skull is the "Not enough tanks + CC, obliterate that one first, DPS warriors will 'tank' it" fallback. Usually, this is for pets that take 5-10 seconds to slaughter, but harass healers if ignored.

Most of the times, you don't even have to say what mean the signs, as quite everyone use the same ones.

I use :

{skull} = 1st focus
{cross} = 2nd focus
{diamond} = seduce
{triangle} = ban
{moon} = sheep
{square} = freezing trap

And for the rest of them, it depends on the situation.

"Kill skull then X. Sheep star. Sap the warlock. And somebody one-shot that stupid imp."

Seeing as how Heroic MrT is pretty much the only 5 man I ever use CC on.

Oh, and shackle is always the one that isn't the skull.

I don't tank that much anymore, but I always followed the same kill order and the same crowd control for months. It wasn't so much for me, but to make sure my DPS was always working together as focus fire.

{skull} - first kill, sometimes a caster that could be stunlocked or slowkited down, otherwise burn.
{cross} - second kill
{circle} - sap
{star} - polymorph
{triangle} - seduce
{square} - ice trap
{diamond} - mind control
{moon} - hibernate

The basic rule was to always start at skull, then go to red, and then follow the rainbow down to purple. Arguments could be made that sap lasts longer than seduce, or ice trap is less reliable than sheep, but on big packs where we employed crowd control, the fights never lasted very long anyway.

5 man

Skull - Kill 1
X - Kill 2
Moon- sheep
triangle - sap/banish
moon- trap / sheep 2

Raids.

We assign a symbol to each tank and keep it constant. I leave Skull out of the symbols as a hey everyone kill this. I don't use often, but things like the Spitfire totem on Fathom Lord come to mind.

Tank symbols are:

Star
Nipple
Diamon
Triangle

Moon - Sheep
Square - Sheep

Cross / Skull - Various.. MC or cc and other oddities as they arrise.
