Last Man Standing

It looks like I need to grind PVP to get the S1 gavel. I've made it through to level 70 without fighting a single BG, so have no idea about honor etc. I tried my first Eye of the Storm over the weekend and we won, I was awared 200 honor points for taking abuse for 14 year olds for 10 mins:

Now I've looked up the gavel and threads on here and apparently it's "virtually free" now at 25,200 honor points. I must be missing something being an utter PVP noob but

25,200/200 = 126 wins at 10mins each (not sure how long a battle is, maybe longer) = 1260 minutes or 21 hours playtime. That's assuming we win every battle, and apparently alliance lose 90% of my server.

21 hours getting yelled at by 14 year old boys? Surely my calculations are wrong?

Nope, but the fun thing is you get the EotS marks, then just go pay AFKValley a visit.

OK, thanks levantine. I already got 3 EotS marks from one go in EotS. So do I earn honor faster in AFKvalley?

Or is it still 21 hours of playtime minimum?

21 hours is a long long time for a player as casual as me.

21 hours playtime if your lucky and mostly win the games. Probably more on the lines of 30-40 hours of gametime (averaged ~800-1k honor per hour usually in afkvalley)

Of course, gametime is a very loose term. It's called AFKValley because you sit in it, and alt tab to do other things, or watch a movie, occasionally jumping so you don't zone out.

Again, not to be a wet blanket, but based on the issues you've been describing, you could pick up 300 extra spell damage and it wouldn't fix the DPS pulling aggro. Swapping a Crystalforged for a S1 gavel is going to give you an estimated extra 40 threat per second, to put it in perspective.

Trying to convince your guildies to play properly might be a long, uphill battle, but it'll still take less time than grinding 25k honor, and it has the advantage of actually having the potential to fix the problem. Smile

Alternately, Magister's Terrace runs (learn the instance on normal, once you're ready, on heroic) would be a much better way to spend your time. The Cudgel of Consecration off heroic is as good or better than the S1 gavel.

Ah, I see

No Sweeney, I see your point entirely. Its more of an acceptance thing, if I'm wearing an epic mace my guildies may take me more seriously.

However, given the enormous amount of time to get an S1 gavel I could grind Lower City rep, have far more fun and get the Lower City Gavel which is only slightly worse.

Some guildies ran Mag Terrace on normal and lasted about 5 minutes... heroic is a long long way off.

I seem to be hitting a casual player gear ceiling.

Nope, you're hitting a casual player skill ceiling. Sad Unfortunately, based on how you've described your guildies I'm not surprised they couldn't get through MgT trash.

MgT is mostly spell damage, meaning that apart from HP your gear doesn't make that huge a difference for survivability. Pulling groups by breaking line of sight, using CC, etc. make this instance absolutely doable for people in blues. It does definately sound like you'll have to PUG it. Even terrible PUG DPSers have learned "Don't DPS the target while it's running around a corner to the tank."

I always do a little pvp here and there starting at level 19. Basically whenever Im bored with other things during leveling. SO I had some saved up already.
Also you can get like 800 honor for a AV holiday bonus weekend. Plus you get honor for killing people. It adds up fast but if you are starting from zero you may want to look into getting another mace with as close to 200 spell damage as you can find. Then itemize.

Thanks

Just a quick note to say thanks to all who contributed to this thread and the very helpful stickies. I finally managed to reach uncrushable using the unusual route of Blacksmithing (had to be useful for something!):

Anyway the Boots of Protector I made myself really helped both with threat and avoidance stats. Now I'm gonna to start to stack stamina.
