Maybe you're just not as skilled as he is. Maybe they have known him longer and/or like him better. It's not all about stats.

the reliability thing is a big issue. For Kara through Hyjal progression and beginning BT, we literally decked out one warrior- with the intentions of him being our go-to guy for illidan basically.

We steamrolled through BT- 6 weeks and we were in front of council (way pre-patch). our geared out warrior started having attendance problems, people got irate with him, he said eff you guys and stopped playing till Wotlk release.

our guild leader said he wasnt going to make the same mistake again,as it left us sitting in shatt for 2 weeks recruiting a tank.

i think by designating ANYONE a 'maintank' you add a risk to further progression. 'maintank' gets gear over others and is expected to make near 100% raids. what happens when RL sucks and his internet goes out, or he has to cancel his subscription cause his wife gets pregnant.

If he's performing well and the guild is beating the content it's taking on, I can't imagine why they would even consider wanting to give their proven, trusted MT a demotion. No one but other tanks and maybe healers ever looks at a tank's stats, and you're saying he's got you beat in health anyway.

Put yourself in his shoes, and the guild's shoes.

On the other hand, if you're getting to raid and get upgrades and such, I don't see the problem. If you like the guild, then as you perform consistently you'll develop trust and get a good reputation; maybe y'all can work out a way to take turns on bosses, like my guild does (totally informally, btw).

I can't understand the "main tank" mentality anymore either. Our 10 man uses a paladin (myself) and a DK to tank. He does more DPS than I do when there's not a boss hitting him, so he gets to DPS when the fight calls for a single tank. I wouldn't call myself the "main tank" of the group though, we're about equally geared and skilled and he could easily tank any fight that I've tanked and I could tank any fight that he's tanked in either roll. The instance calls for 2 tanks, and here we are, the two tanks. Why does one have to be "main"?

Warrior EH is hp x 110% x 1/(100%-mitigtion from armor)
Paladin EH is hp x 106% x 103% x 1/(100%-mitigation from armor)

The differences in block value arguably counting towards EH are way too subjective and complicated to compare with numbers >.<

If your guild is convinced the warrior is a better tank by class/stats you can prove if its not the case. I doubt however that very many people understand avoidance mitigation and EH, let alone care. The warrior gets the job done, and they are comfortable with him MTing, so they stick with that.

If you want to tank bosses, you can begin by asking to MT some stuff, and just make sure you bring your A-game all the time. Overplaying the importance of the "main tank" role is unhealthy...and trying to get it at the expense of trying to prove weaknesses in a fellow guildy is even more unhealthy. Its just a fact of wow that in guilds that still live by the "MT" philosophy (rather than "tank team"), you basicly have to have FORMED the guild in order to get that spot....or else unusual circumstances like someone quitting the game could land you with it.

Tanking adds isnt something to be ashamed of. In many cases the offtanks have more difficult jobs than the MT anyway. Like illidan.....MT got to chillax, not get sheared and move out the the flame crash things.....OTs got to play with the super laggy buggy insta-gibbing flame adds of doom =D

A big part of being a good tank it not just knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, but those of -all- classes in the game. And knowing how to combine all those strengths and avoid using any classes' weak spots.
