Emergency Threat Generation

One of the issues that people reference a lot about tankadins is a good portion of their threat is retribution damage via Holy Shield and possibly Ret Aura. Especially hard with offtanking and really ugly with a combat rez. This causes issues with regaining aggro sometimes on untauntable mobs. I've been poking around trying to come up with a good way to get threat back.

The first thing that I do already is stop Holy Shield and throw down some or all my CDs, but there's certainly more tricks I could pull here. Speaking of which, what kind of trinkets would we want now?

One of the first things that comes to mind is swapping my shield with a spelldamage shield or even an offhand item as well as a threat weapon switch.

I don't think that there's really any weapons with the spell damage (since we can't use staves) but what about switching to a 2 handed mace/sword? It would have to be fairly compelling to overcome the 5% 1h specialization and reduced speed on Righteousness.

Another point to keep in mind here is that we wouldn't be getting as much Spiritual Attunement back either, and can't seal wisdom, since that would defeat the purpose. Consecration is often useless anyway, if the target starts to kite the boss.

So what tricks to you use to get some emergency off target, untauntable aggro?

Let's see, immediate burst threat:
Seal of Vengeance (if needed, say after a rez)
auto attack + Concecrate
Avenger's Shield
Hammer of the Righteous
Judgement of Light (you should have a 5 stack by now)
Holy shield
...and continue to hit your attacks as they cool down.

Judgement of Light is proving to be an extremely effective threat tool, with multiple melee dpsers.

How well do you think Hand of Sacrifice would work vs. Hand of Salvation on the target? I think the biggest question would be whether you are second in threat or if you were down at the bottom of the list.

How about this?

Seal Vengeance, chuck the shield when you head in, Consecrate, put a Hand of Protection on the main target, Hand of Salvation on the next, which gives you some seconds while it works, so drop hammers. and finally a Hand of Sacrifice if there's a third target. Caster bosses would skip the Hand of Protection phase.

This would give you the benefit of only needing to beat the third highest group member's aggro table. The big downside is that the 3rd highest is very likely to be a healer, specifically, the one that just dropped your rez or big heal on the first target! So this is one of those ideas that might sound great but just won't work in the field.

Is this "emergency" happening alot? In 3.0 our threat is far less based on what i always call "reactive" damage. I am not even running ret aura anymore... and holy shield is no longer spammed like my life depends on it. We cleared hyjal last night and the only time I got pulled off was by warlocks who pull crpyt fiends because they were late to my AoE party. If you are quick on your BoP, you are fine.... thats always been the paladins solution to this problem. If you are getting pulled off constantly, either your DPS cant read omen or you need to get more strength gear.

Our ap doesn't buff sp. Our stam does. And our scaling is directly derived from ap and sp together. And of course ap benefits the spells equally, or slightly better.

If you can choose between 50 sp and 50 ap, you pick 50 ap. AP procs definitely count.

Hint: Open your character sheet, and change the tab called "Spell" to "melee"
